Conference Schedule

Check-In and Registration begin 7:45 a.m. on Friday. Sessions run from Friday at 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. Cost includes coffee breaks but no meals.

Participating in the Conference

We invite your attendance and participation in the 2019 SCJ Conference. Here's what's in store in addition to the plenary sessions:

Parallel papers presented by attendees:

More than 50 papers will be presented on all topics, biblical, theological, historical, and more.  

The first 35 paper topics submitted were guaranteed a presentation slot. (Deadline for submitting paper titles was January 20, 2019). For information regarding any remaining openings, please contact Jeff Painter, Conference Parallel Paper Coordinator, at jeff.painter@scinternational.org.

Study Groups

These study groups will meet: **

Presenters have been decided for each study group. Contact Dawn Gentry, Dean of the Study Groups, [dgentry1905@gmail.com] for more details or any possible openings due to cancellations.

Student paper competitions:

Student paper competitions are open each year in two divisions: undergraduate (for juniors and seniors) and graduate student (for those in masters degree programs). Finalists will present their papers at a special conference session to decide winners in each category.

Prizes will be awarded at the conference. A $2500 graduate school scholarship at one of ten Stone-Campbell related schools will be awarded to the winner in each division.

Schools include: Abilene Christian University, Austin Graduate School of Theology, Brite Divinity School, Emmanuel Christian Seminary, Harding School of Theology, Hope International University, Johnson University, Lexington Theological Seminary, Lincoln Christian University, and Phillips Theological Seminary.

The winners and finalists will be honored in the final session of the conference. They will also receive a modest stipend toward their conference costs plus other prizes, including a one-year membership in the Stone-Campbell Scholars Community.

Issac Errett Award winner presentation:

The Isaac Errett Award for papers in Stone-Campbell History for graduate school students is conducted and awarded annually by the Disciples of Christ Historical Society.

The deadline for submissions is now closed, and the winner will be determined previous to the conference.  Recipient of the award will present their paper as a parallel speaker, and also be honored in the final session of the conference. The winner will be awarded a cash prize of $250, plus a one-year membership in the Stone-Campbell Scholars Community. Location and Getting There

The 2019 SCJ Conference will be back at Johnson University, Knoxville, Tennessee. Physical campus address for navigation: 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville, TN 37998. The area is served by Knoxville McGhee Tyson Airport.

Shuttle Bus Transportation

Shuttle service will be available between the conference hotel (Holiday Inn Express) twice a day on Friday and Saturday, including after the optional Friday night dinner. Please note the shuttle service will only be available to and from this hotel.

Airport Transportation

As a courtesy, JU and SCJ Conference will assist with pre-requested airport transfers to McGhee Tyson Airport whenever possible. Please indicate your transportation needs on the registration form. If you don’t have your flight details when you register, you can provide them later but they must be received by March 22 for planning purposes. After this date, you will need to arrange your own transportation from the airport.

Meals

Meals are on your own, not included in the conference pricing. On-campus options on Friday for the Johnson University dining hall are breakfast (7-8:30 a.m., $5.25); lunch (10:45 a.m. – 1 p.m., $6.75), and dinner (5-6:30 p.m., $8.25). In addition, on Saturday, brunch will be available from 10:45 a.m.-12 n. ($6.75). You will pay for these meals when you purchase them, but please indicate your interest in these meals on the registration form to assist in planning.

Optional Friday night group dinner: In addition, on Friday night there will be an optional dinner together, either in Knoxville or on campus in the private dining rooms.

For either option, you will pay for your own meal (estimated price range $15-25) but you must make a reservation to guarantee your spot. If we go off-campus, transportation to the restaurant and back to the conference hotel will be provided.

As planning is still ongoing, please indicate your interest and any preferences on your registration form.  Watch for more information to follow.

Conference Hotel

For 2019, the conference has booked a block of rooms at the Holiday Inn Express, just off Strawberry Plains Pike at 730 Rufus Graham Rd, Knoxville. This is one of many hotels at the Strawberry Plains Pike exit off I-40, about 12 miles from campus.

The nonsmoking rooms are available for the SCJ Conference for Thursday and Friday nights at the reduced rate of $116 plus tax for either two queen beds or one king bed. Rate includes free parking, and wi-fi. A limited number of rooms at the conference rate are also available on Wednesday night. To book a room, call the hotel direct at 865- 525-5100.

This rate is only guaranteed until March 14 and space is not guaranteed.

Shuttle service will be available to this hotel twice a day on Friday and Saturday, including after the optional Friday night dinner. Please note the shuttle service will only be available to and from this hotel.

There is very limited on-campus housing. To request on-campus, dorm style guest housing (singles only), please indicate your interest in this on the registration form and you may also directly contact guesthousing@johnsonu.edu. The rate is $20 per night per guest. Linens are provided.

All persons involved in the program for the conference must register.

Registration for spouses is $30 ($20 for student spouses) and includes a name badge and access to conference activities. 

Spouse registration is limited to individuals who are not formally affiliated with participating academic institutions nor in professional ministry positions.  

In addition, Johnson University students may attend the conference for free. Johnson University Tennessee faculty, administration, and students who are not members/subscribers may attend one conference session at no cost, but if more than one session pay $30. All must register regardless.

Conference registration includes attendance at all sessions, access to conferee-only discounted book sales, coffee and snack breaks, shuttle bus transportation, and on-site parking.
