Since it was initiated in 2003, the annual awarding of Stone-Campbell Journal Promising Scholar Awards has become an anticipated, spring tradition among many colleges, universities, and graduate schools connected to SCJ. Students are selected by faculty as the most promising of their graduating class to succeed at their next level of biblical or theological education, whether in a master’s program or a Ph.D. program. These awards are presented at awards or graduation ceremonies.
This year with the COVID-19 coronavirus causing the shutdown schools across the country beginning in March the ensuring chaos disrupted traditional graduations and honor recognitions as well. This meant some schools just could not get to the processes for granting this recognition award. So, the numbers of award is notably lower than normal. Awards ended up not being reported until summer, after which they were also sent out.
This year fourteen students were honored, four graduate students and twelve undergraduate students . Twelve schools participated.
Those honored receive a Promising Scholar certificate from SCJ plus a free, one-year’s free subscription to SCJ. See the full list plus past recipients at the Promising Scholars tab on the SCJ Website.
