2023 SCJ Conference Successfully Hosted by Johnson Univeserity

One hundred eighty-eight people attended the 2023 SCJ Conference, April 14-15, hosted by Johnson University, Knoxville, TN. Registrants included people from Texas, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, Missouri, Tennessee, Nebraska, Oregon, Wisconsin, Alabama, Michigan, Virginia Kansas, Kentucky.

Attendees registered from 36 different colleges, universities, and graduate schools, with Johnson University Tennessee leading the way with 28, followed by Emmanuel Christian Seminary (13), Great Lakes University (12), Dallas Christian College (9), Johnson University Florida (8), Lincoln Christian University (6), Emmanuel Christian University (5), and Milligan University (5). Registrants also came from fourteen different churches and thirteen different independent ministries. Most registrants were faculty (60) but many were students (53). Students included Graduate (11), undergraduate (25), and Ph.D. (17).

The theme of Jesus in the Gospels: Parables, Female Disciples, and Children featured speakers Amy-Jill Levine, University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies and Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies, Vanderbilt University, who will present "Reading the Parables as Jewish Stories"; "Christian Privilege and Christian Fragility: The Sins of Denying and Deflecting Problematic Biblical Passages"; Amy Lindeman Allen, Assistant Professor of New Testament, Christian Theological Seminary, who will present "Children in the Gospels"; and Holly Carey, Professor of New Testament, Point University, who will present “Female Disciples in the Gospels.”

These lectures were complemented by more than 58 experienced and emerging scholars who gave presentations in parallel sessions, 12 study groups, and 2 student paper context sessions.

Plenary and Study Group sessions were available virtually as well as in-person. Sixteen registered for virtual. Some were international: Ghana and Canada. Nine were part of a "watch" party at Dallas Christian College.
