2024 SCJ Conference Successfully Hosted by Milligan University

One hundred fifty-one people from twenty-five different states and one country attended the 2024 SCJ Conference, April 12-13, hosted by Milligan University, Johnson City, TN. Registrants included people from California, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Connecticut, New York, Kentucky, Tennessee, Nebraska, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Florida and Ghana.

Attendees registered from 34 different colleges, universities, and graduate schools, 14 churches, and 10 other ministries. Milligan (including Emmanuel Christian Seminary) lead the way with 41, followed by Great Lakes University (15), Johnson University (9), Kentucky Christian University (8) Abilene Christian University, Point University (4), Faulkner University (4). Most registrants were faculty (67) but many were students (49). Students included Graduate (21), undergraduate (20), and Ph.D. (8).

The theme was: Exploring the Hermeneutics of Identity. Featured speakers included: Love Sechrest, Professor of Theology, Mount St. Mary’s University, who presented: "Associative Hermeneutics: A Womanist Method for Biblical Ethics," (Friday, April 12) and "Allies for Christ," A Womanist Theology of Solidarity in the Gospel of Matthew" (Saturday, April 13); Miriam Perkins, Professor of History of Theology and Society, Emmanuel Christian Seminary at Milligan, who will present: "Fragrant Freedom: Calling our Bound Brothers from Tomb to Table" (Friday, April 12); and Daniel Rodriguez, Professor of Religion and Hispanic Studies, Pepperdine University, who presented: "Reading the New Testament in Hispanic/Immigrant Perspective" (Saturday, May 13).

These lectures were complemented by more than 68 experienced and emerging scholars who gave presentations in 18 parallel sessions, 11 study groups, and 3 student paper contest sessions.

Plenary and Study Group sessions were available virtually as well as in-person. Six registered for virtual. One was international: Ghana. Others were domestic: Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, and Oregon.
