Abstract

The concept of divine eternality as necessarily “above time” gained ascendance in classical Greek philosophy, was introduced into Christian theology especially by Augustine, and has since been dominant in Western Christian and now evangelical thought. The biblical texts, however, do not support this understanding, instead presenting divine eternality as the infinite duration of God’s existence. Temporality is an ordering principle of created reality because it is first and eternally an ordering principle of God’s own mind.
